Dog-friendly Road Trips – We call this trip “Lincoln’s List” because this itinerary was created with our furry best friend in mind.

Our pup, Lincoln, has been traveling with us since 2019 and is a big part of why we fell in love with road trips. Simply jumping in the car is the most affordable way to travel with it (and we take the Lincoln almost everywhere).

Lincoln takes you on this trip to New England because summer and fall temperatures are great, outdoor activities abound, and you’ll find one of the most dog-friendly national parks in the United States.

This itinerary is similar to our Wicked Good: 10 Day NE Road Trip itinerary, but only includes the first stops and suggestions on how to bring your pup along!

In the summer, take advantage of the long daylight hours and cooler temperatures found in many other states this time of year. Or take a fall trip and take advantage of the amazing fall foliage at one of the best places in the world for leaf viewing.

We spent 5 months in Ontario and New England during the 2022 travel season. We spent two weeks in July in LH, a long weekend camping on the Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park in early August, three weeks in Lake Placid, NY in mid to late August, a month in Campton, NH in September, three weeks in Ellsworth, ME in early October and three weeks in Attleboro, MA in late October. (We also spent three weeks in Ontario at the start of our trip.)

It really wasn’t a bad time to be in New England these months. Sure, the summer months can be warm at night, but make sure your rental has air conditioning and you’ll be fine. (To be honest, we folks who live in Texas say it differently, so our tolerance for heat is probably higher than those who live up north year-round. That said, we don’t do anything without air conditioning, so in this sense, our tolerance is probably lower!)

However, we will say that if you want to plan a trip to see the beautiful fall foliage, try to travel in the second week of October. Although places known for foliage will be busy (eg Kancamagus Highway and Stowe, VT), the views will be worth it!

RTL Tip: Do you want more time for hiking or spending time on the water during your trip? Visit in July or August. Do you want pleasant autumn walks through the leaves with hot cider in hand? Visit in October Want cooler temperatures but fewer crowds? Visit in September.

Lincoln is definitely a fan of the trips we can lead because it makes connecting with us so much easier. If you are close enough to any point on this route to drive, we recommend it. Drive to the nearest point on this route and make a full circle to get home.

However, if you can’t drive and have a dog that does well on a plane, you can fly into Boston International Airport and pick up a rental car upon landing. If you are flying in, we recommend planning this route a bit and driving from Boston > Lake Placid > Stowe > Lincoln, NH > Acadia National Park > Portland > Boston.

We recommend that you treat this route as a traditional road trip, staying at a different location at each stop. You can view campsites near each destination or stay in nearby towns.

For Stowe, consider Smugglers’ Notch State Park Campground or the town of Stowe. (You can also check out Burlington, about 40 minutes away. Downtown Burlington is very dog ​​friendly!)

For Acadia National Park, consider Blackwoods Campground or the town of Bar Harbor. (Can’t find anything there? Try Ellsworth, ME. If you end up in Ellsworth, check out the Blue Hill Mountain Hike at sunset. It’s spectacular, dog-friendly, and rivals the view from Acadia with 1/100 the crowds. !)

Lincoln (the city, not to be confused with our dog of the same name) is in the middle of New Hampshire’s White Mountains. That’s what makes it such a great place to start your dog-friendly journey.

But since we only plan to enjoy White Mountain for one day on this trip, here are our top suggestions for the best.

This is a bonus because you are actually driving the Kancamagus Highway on your way from Portland to Lincoln. (So ​​whenever you do this drive on your trip, come back to this section. If you’re not doing the entire loop on this route, consider driving the Kancamagus Highway for about two hours round trip during your stay. in Lincoln.)

Dog Friendly Vacations Across The United States

Kancamagus Highway is a 34 mile highway between Lincoln, NH and Conway, NH. It is one of the most popular roads in New Hampshire and one of the best places to view fall foliage in the United States. Although there are MANY viewpoints and trails on this scenic route, we recommend that you only stop at a few viewpoints and not do any of the hikes on this route, even though you may be busy the entire way. (We’ve got a better one!) Note: Visiting in the fall? get up early This drive fills up quickly, so go the night before or get an early wake-up call on your way to your next destination to avoid long lines and heavy traffic. The Kancamagus Highway is great, but it better not be your only activity for the day!

Let’s get you and your pup out of the car and into the woods! Hiking was the activity that kept us most busy during our month in New Hampshire. We explored every weekend and for many weeks. Spending time outside on the trail is one of the best things to do in New Hampshire.

You can check out our favorite hikes in New Hampshire here, but if you want our top recommendation, we recommend heading up Welch-Dicky Mountain. This approximately 4.4 mile loop is a wonderful half day hike with amazing mountain views. Dog friendly, it’s a good workout and a lot of fun if you hit a lot of terrain between exposed rocks and wooded trails.

Get Your Dog Friendly Kicks On Route 66

Both Welch and Dickey Mountain. When going uphill in the steepest parts, we recommend going counter-clockwise. (This is especially helpful if it’s humid or if you’re visiting during the fall foliage season when the leaves are on the ground. Take your time, the ground can be slippery).

Are dogs allowed? Absolutely. Everything on this trip is Lincoln (the dog) approved! Be aware that there are steep sections of this walk on exposed rock.
