Dog Care Advice For Busy Families – It takes a village to raise a child and frankly own a dog. Due to the pandemic, dog sharing is on the rise, with one in five owners sharing dog care duties between friends and family members, according to John Lewis Finance. 

During the pandemic, 3.2 million households bought pets, increasing the number of dog-owning households in the UK from 22% to 33%. As the nation returns to work, the realities of fitting pet ownership around a 9-5 job aren’t so simple. While the Dogs Foundation reported a 35% increase in calls to rehabilitate epidemic puppies in November 2021, other owners turned to sharing their dogs as an easier way to manage pet ownership.

“I was at Taco’s house last night and I was thinking how quiet my house is without him,” Claire Rennie says of the dog she shares custody with. “I like Taco – well, he’s not my dog, but I treat him like one.”

Officially, Taco is owned by Gareth McKeever and his family, who live in Far Sarre in the South Lakes of Cumbria, but when they first bought their springer spaniel, they consulted a dog lover called Rennie. Breed, including his current pet, 10-year-old Milo.

“We started playing between the dogs. Milo is very patient and kind with Taco and we think that helped him adjust because he left his litter when we got him,” McGeever continued “From there, Claire volunteered to take care of Taco while we were gone and, gradually it evolved to the point where Taco went home to sleep.”

As a small business owner who is often called on short notice (McKeever runs Pure Lakes Skincare and employs Rennie as a caretaker), the sharing arrangement worked well. “For example, today, I have to be in the workshop and obviously, being a skincare manufacturer, we can’t have dogs, so I asked Claire if she could look after him. It seems to be working well,” she explains it. .

Since McGeever is Taco’s official owner, he pays for the dog’s expenses, including vet bills, food and enrichment (activities and games), but given how much he enjoys her company, Rennie is happy to take care of him. 

“Spaniels are very loyal dogs and don’t like to be left alone, so when Gareth is busy it’s useful to give Taco company,” agrees Rennie. “Obviously Gareth is the owner of Taco, but he seems very comfortable staying at our house. Some dogs get upset about being away from home, but I don’t think that’s the case with Taco because he knows us so well.

While sharing with dogs is nothing new, it’s only in the last decade that entrepreneurs have embraced the trend. In 2012, BorrowMyDoggy launched a paid subscription service for people who want to share their pet or take care of dogs. Membership costs £44.99 per year for dog owners and £12.99 per month for dog borrowers, with insurance built in.

While BorrowMyDoggy is the biggest name in dog swapping, its popularity has seen a proliferation of programs like Paw Pals and Rover.com. However, these programs have been criticized by some dog lovers for confusing the dogs or complicating their training.

“Consistency is one of the most important factors in properly training a dog, so if owners [and their part-time handlers] take different approaches to training, this can confuse the dog and cause it to withdraw,” says Lee Gibson. With the recent spate of dog attacks involving poorly trained and unfamiliar walkers, this should make owners more cautious. 

And while the arrangement suits both McKeever and Rennie, research from John Lewis Finance suggests sharing a pet can be tough. According to her research, two-fifths of dog sharers have experienced tensions with their co-owners over the costs of caring for an animal.

How To Become A Pet Sitter

In addition to careful financial planning, it’s important for pet owners to carefully consider their dog’s needs before starting an arrangement. “Dogs like routines, so it makes sense to try to do things on a regular basis – weekends in one house, weekdays in another; rather than cutting and changing,” says vet Pete Wedderburn. Try to stick to the same exercise routine. It makes sense to carry the dog’s bed and food bowls. 

He adds: “Dogs tend to live in the moment, paying attention to what is directly in front of them: they are experts at memory.

“Most dogs will be fine with it. They’re smarter than we think when it comes to rules in different households – if an owner sets a firm boundary, a dog will usually pick up on it quickly.

Watch your dog and make sure he’s comfortable before making any permanent arrangements, Dr. Wedderburn continues. “There are individual dogs that can be very attached to a person or particularly curious, and that doesn’t work well for them,” she says. “It is therefore important to assess the individuality of the animal in question before proceeding with such an arrangement.”

Anxiety in dogs is not always easy to spot, but the Dogs Foundation advises owners to look out for tail dropping, looking away, excessive yawning or blinking, body weight shifting backwards and poor body posture.

The human partnership may be more susceptible to stress in dog-sharing arrangements. Online, Mumsnet posters have warned that primary owners are sometimes looking for a dog sharing ad but really a free walking service. One revealed they were lined up with landlords who wanted to “pay for a parking permit and arrive at the same time every day”. 

Elsewhere, a Facebook group was started last year by an owner whose “partners” took two of his Westins and refused to return them. Another harrowing experience involved a blogger who failed to catch her sharing dog – she eventually discovered she was “very drunk” but luckily the dog was unharmed. Reddit users say that sharers can be random and unreliable. 

Although the arrangement between McKeever and Rennie made it clear that Taco was the legal owner, the other pet-sharing arrangements were not as straightforward. Stowe family law attorney Gabriel Reid-Thomas said “pet weddings” are on the rise when people who share dogs, including couples or friends, decide to split up. While these agreements aren’t legally binding on whoever gets the dog, “I think pets are a good idea because in the long run it saves a lot of heartache and pain,” says Reed-Thomas. “Relationship breakups are very stressful, so anything that makes it easier to make decisions afterward is worth considering.”

Adopting A Rescue Dog

McKeever and Rennie made sure to make arrangements for Taco. “I would really say that people should tread very carefully before entering into an arrangement like this,” says McKeever. “Our situation is great because Claire has talked to us a lot about what it’s like to have a spaniel, so we take our lead from her, but if she thinks we’re not treating Taco right, or vice versa, she can. Be really complicated. I think it’s up to the dog to lead. You might think that sharing your dog with your best friend, but if your dog is curious and doesn’t like being in an unfamiliar place. it would be cruel to have Taco in both houses and friends – but something is missing.  You’ve always loved dogs and would love nothing more than taking care of your fur baby, so now you’re wondering, “Can I get a dog if I work all day?”.  When you are busy at work all day, it is unreasonable to bring your dog home alone.
