When there was an unexpected free weekend in June, I took the opportunity to plan a camping trip with our dogs. Our friends at Wagwear helped outfit the pups with their stylish tent (which they loved!) as well as WagWells (basically a dog version of Hunter boots) to keep their feet dry. In addition to their bowls, towels, leashes, food and crates, we also packed some puppies from Spotted Dog Bakery and cozy plaid fleeces from Woof Out West to make their first camping experience truly memorable.

In New York, I always feel the hardest part of camping is reserving a spot. So many of the sites accessible to New Yorkers looking to car camp are booked well in advance and you either have to fly by the seat of your pants and show up to camp hoping to get a spot (not my style) or visit the many jenky sites that allow you to reserve spots online. And many of them don’t allow dogs or have a $50+ dog fee. UGH.

But this camping experience was completely different because I discovered Tentrri. The hosts were incredibly kind and welcoming when we arrived, but other than that the only people we saw during our stay were a couple of kayakers who stopped to see an eagle’s nest (!) near where we were. The dogs couldn’t have loved our little Maine getaway more. Since we were near the water, they could splash in the sandy depths, ride our canoe and run through the forest. It was nice to see them enjoying their freedom since they are on leashes and in small spaces for much of their lives in New York. They came home dirty and exhausted. Choosing your tent carefully is the most important step to ensure comfort. If your pup is a medium-sized dog or larger, you’ll probably want to enlarge your tent. Think of your dog as another person, especially when he goes to sleep.

Two people and a dog? Consider a three-person tent. A man and two dogs? Even though Cool Whip and Hercules weigh about 70 pounds each, they usually curl up and sleep like donuts, so the three of us can fit in a roomy two-person tent.

My camping bed is a standard inflatable sleeping bed and a good sleeping bag. It’s super comfy and Cool Whip and Hercules headed over to my tent to claim my bed! I quickly discovered that the dog beds we packed were not comfortable enough.

Now I pack two inflatable sleeping pads – one for me and one for them. All of them pack down to the size of a soda can and are lightweight and fit easily in my backpack.

Cover the inflatable dog pad with an outdoor dog bed or sleeping bag. These beds and sleeping bags are usually more durable and waterproof, so you don’t have to worry about them getting damaged with unusual use.

Most campsites require dogs to be on a leash at all times, so a zip lock gives your dog freedom by keeping him safely on a leash at your campsite. Plus, your hands are free for other activities like making s’mores!

Or start – I like to pack my dog ​​food in a 15 liter clear plastic bin. This is how I pack a lot of my gear because it’s easy to see what’s inside, they stack up well and keep everything organized in the car.
